How To Effectively Do A Closet Cleanse!

If you are anything like me, you probably have a billion items in your closet...and there is probably a good portion of those items that you seldom (or never) wear! Am I right, ladies? I don't collect knick- knacks...I collect clothes! (...and shoes...and purses...but I digress...) So, every now and then I tell myself I need to go through and do a closet cleanse! So, I decided to write this post "How To Effectively Do A Closet Cleanse", to help you ladies who suffer from my same affliction!

The best thing to do is wait until you can dedicate about a 2-4 hour window for this task. You don't want to really dig into this project unless you have the time to go from start to finish in one shot. Main reason being, it gets worse before it gets better! What I mean is...you are going to make a huge mess! Don't get scared though! You need to make the huge mess to get to the desired end result! It will only look like a bomb went off for a short while...

Ok, so now let's say you have a free Saturday afternoon and you've decided to tackle this project! The first step? Take EVERYTHING out of your closet and drawers. Yes, everything. Start with a completely clean slate! Just use your bed as a place to lay everything out. Once your closet and drawers are bare, and you pretty much want to kill yourself because you just now realized what you've gotten yourself into, then the fun begins!

Start one by one picking up each item you have laid out on your bed. When you look at each item, ask yourself a few questions...Do I wear this? Does it fit? Is it still in style? Will I wear it in the next 6 months? Do I really like it?...If you answer "yes" to most of those and decide to keep it, it goes back into your closet. If you find yourself saying "no" to many of those questions, it is time to let it go. You should try on anything you are at all unsure about. Have a full length mirror near by to see if you feel it looks good on you or not. If you feel it doesn't compliment your body, give it the boot. What I like to do is get a couple tote boxes or garbage bags ready for my closet cleanse. I designate one for items to donate, and one for selling (because I usually have a yard sale during the summer). This way, as I decide an item is no longer wanted, I can immediately decide where it will go.

Once you go through all your items and have decided whether you are keeping or getting rid of each, hopefully as you refill your closet, it will only contain items you really like and want. If you are feeling really ambitious, go for the shoes, purses, and accessories too! The more organized, the better!

I hope these tips help you to eliminate some closet clutter!

Do you have any additional tips that help to do a closet cleanse?

  1. I literally looked at my linen closet this morning and thought, I NEED to do something about this! It is puking out blankets and towels all over everything! Thanks for the motivation. I think I'll have to tackle this soon and I like the idea of taking everything out first!

  3. This is great advice. I am not necessarily a clothing collector, but I hang on to stuff well past when I should. I try to tell myself I will fit into it again or that my life still necessitates me having a suit. Of course, the last time I cleaned out my closet, my husband brought home a humungous box of baseball cards he had from his childhood and stuck them right in the closet, thus destroying all of my motivation to purge any further.

    Love your ideas!

  4. I did my wardrobe and drawers last year via the konmari method. It's ruthless but really worked, although I've recently got rid of a few more since.

  5. I have to do a good closet purge at least once a year. While I would love to sell some of it on swap groups, I just can't be bothered and usually just donate everything I don't wear.

  6. I have a love and hate relationship with purging my closet. On one hand getting rid of memories breaks my heart but I know that I can replace it with new ones.

  8. Ooh, I love cleaning out my closet!! It always feels great to get rid of stuff I don't need - you feel lighter in general afterwards. It's amazing how little you actually do wear on a regular basis, if you're honest with yourself! The questions you put together should be really helpful to getting rid of the clutter.

  17. A task I hate! I end up putting things in the goodwill bin, letting the bin sit in my room for 3 months while I take things out and put them back in the closet! My big 50 gallon bin becomes a ziploc sandwich bag with a broken earring, a tarnished bracelet, and some spare buttons!
