For the Love of Books!

This weekend, our local library was holding a book sale. I mentioned going to my son, thinking maybe it would be something fun to do together. I wasn't even sure if he would want to go, but to my surprise, he talked about it for two days! So, when Saturday arrived, he sure had not forgotten! "Get up and get dresses, so we can go to the library today, mommy", is what I heard first thing Saturday morning! I love that he enjoys books so much! He also loves to use the computers at the library too! I currently don't have a printer at home, so he loves to type something up and print it out. He is so proud of himself when he holds that typed page in his hands!

So, did we find some good books to buy? We sure as heck did! Because Saturday was the last day of their sale, the special was "fill a bag for $2.00". Great deal! We had so much fun browsing through the huge selection, and finding some gems! Alexander went through all the children's books, one by one... finding about 8 to purchase. A few chapter books, which he has recently really gotten into, a couple funny books, and a couple educational ones, too.

Two that I especially liked are called "Why Am I Different?" and "The Dangers of Strangers". I liked these because they both teach a good lesson. In school and with peers, children often struggle if they have some sort of issue that makes them "different". We teach our children not to make fun of these individuals, but we know all too well that often they are made fun of, or bullied. The sad result is that the children then feel inadequate or "weird". Their self-esteem could be damaged for years from this. The book is a good reminder that everyone is different and should be accepted for their own special values and uniqueness. This is especially important to me because my son has some disabilities, including being visually impaired and has weakness in his left hand. I want this to be a reminder to him that everyone has their own strengths and struggles. Where he may have troubles in one area, he excels in another. It points out that everyone looks different, has different likes and dislikes. Also, it talks about how people's families are different and our homes are different. This book was a great find!

The other book serves as a good way to discuss safety with your child, about the danger of strangers. You have to let your children know that sometimes "bad people" look nice, they are not going to look like monsters. They will look just like everyone else, and you can't trust someone just because they look nice. It also addresses that just because someone knows your name or says "your mommy (or daddy) sent me to pick you up", does not make them a safe person to go with. It goes through a few of the scenarios that we know child abductors have used; the ploy of candy, or someone posing as they need help searching for a lost pet. Having a book that covers all of this is just a nice way to remind your child how to be safe in this crazy world.

Hey, I found some good books for myself, too! I scored three really nice cook books! Yes, I know things like Pinterest are only a touch away at any time, but I am a little old school when it comes to recipes. I love a good ol' fashioned cook book in front of me! Is anyone else like that? Or am I just weird? LOL. Well, regardless, I am excited to try some of these yummy recipes from these books!

I also found a really interesting book called "My Secrets". Who is the author or this book? No one. And everyone. It is a collection, put together by Frank Warren, of all kinds of random things young adults had submitted. Some are funny and clever, and others are sad and down right troubling. It is raw and revealing, that's for sure. This collection of thoughts and feelings are an interesting look into people's mind. An example of one shared secret is "I cheated my way through EMT school"...now, that's a scary thought.

We spent nearly two hours at the library on this day...between checking out books and using the computers. We have one of the best libraries that I have ever been to. It is not the largest, but the staff are so friendly and helpful, and we love spending time there!

Do you spend time at your local library? Are you a total book hoarder? Do you always have your nose stuck in a book? What's your favorite book?

  2. I am very much a book hoarder, lol. I love going to Indigo for book readings, getting a chance to hear a paragraph or two from the author and then have a chance to meet them and possibly get their book signed. I accidentally wound up with a collection, heh. We don't get a chance to visit our library as often as I like since moving; its harder to get to this one, than the one I grew up by, but when we do get a chance, Kit is always eager to read while we're there! :)

  11. My husband and I took our kids to the library once a week when they were young. We had so much fun and they loved bringing their books home to read. Now they are adults and they still love to read. Although I think they read most of their books digitally now days.
