Silicone Baking Mat Review...and my epic fail on a Pinterest DIY project!

I recently got the opportunity to review these great silicone baking mats! I remember back several years ago when my (then) husband was attending culinary school and got one of these through school. That was my first exposure to silicone baking mats. Obviously being a part of a culinary school curriculum, you can tell these are used by serious professional chefs! I have never had one personally before, so I really wanted to give these a try for myself!

Now, it was just last weekend that I did a bunch of baking...and baking equals eating...so when these showed up, I was excited to try them out, but I didn't necessarily want to bake again. So, I had a "great" idea! I had just recently seen on Pinterest, where you take peppermint candies, bake them, and mold them into a bowl. Basically, a candy dish made out of candy! I wanted to try it anyway, so I thought this would be the perfect time to go for it, since I just got these great silicone baking mats!

Place the candies in this formation (3, 4, 5, 4, 3)

Preheat oven to 300 F., then bake for approx. 8 minutes

once removed from oven, let cool for just a minute or two...
using oven mitts (it will be hot!) place the silicone mat with
the candy over a small bowl/cup. Allow to cool completely.
I looked up how to make these candy bowls on Pinterest, where I had originally seen the idea. I followed the directions, at least I think I did...somehow however, mine turned out nothing like the Pinterest version I had seen! It was like one of those jokes where you see an amazingly cute a creative cupcake platter on the left...with someone's poor pathetic attempt on the right, with the phrase "nailed it" above. Haha, yeah, slightly embarrassing, but I totally had that experience with these! But, I can laugh at myself...heck, I can even share my epic fail with y'all so you can laugh at me too! I won't feel too bad though...admit it, you too have probably tried a DIY Pinterest project that just didn't turn out quite right, lol.

my little joke on how I "nailed it"...the one on the left being the nicely
one shown on Pinterest.

my very first one...awful! I call it my "abstract candy bowl"

I had to see if I could do better...the second one was slightly better, lol

Ok, so let's just talk about these awesome silicone baking mats for a moment, and forget about my little candy bowl project lol. First of all, I love that they made them purple! And how nice that it comes with a matching spatula! These were easy to use and easy to clean. Even when using something as sticky as candy, nothing stuck to them! The fact that I wasn't happy with my candy bowls wasn't in anyway the fault of these baking mats either, just so you know. That was totally me just not having the skills to pull it off. (as least on this, my first try) These silicone mats can be used for baking cookies, not to mention so many other items! Every serious baker or cook should have a set of these!

  1. This means that you are human! I swear all of the great crafts on Pinterest are made by complete artists...not people like you and me :) Regardless...I would still totally gift those! It is homemade and candy!!!

  2. Now I really think yours is cute, it is a little " Salvador Dalí " but still good. That second one turned out like the Pinterest one though. I want to try this too. Great writing style, it was funny.

  4. I think your bowls look kinda cool. I like the abstract look :) Those baking mats sounds awesome! I'm not so good in the kitchen, so I've never had one.
